The University of Maryland's Network Operations Group is responsible for maintaining the operational status of the University's network infrastructure and operates 24 7, 365 days a year. This position is responsible for maintaining all network devices, including both the wired and wireless networks. Maintenance includes resolving hardware issues, upgrading code as necessary, diagnosing and resolving network performance issues. This position also provides technical consultation and guidance for Network Operations, DIT, and the University.

This position will also be involved with planning, coordinating, and implementing network infrastructure changes. The engineer should be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Project management skills are desirable. This engineer will be expected to participate in group projects. This position will keep network infrastructure documents and diagrams up to date as needed.

This position requires an understanding of network security and may require the development and deployment of network security services.

This position requires the mentoring of student Network Operations Center staff. Other duties as assigned, including managing network resources such as installed fiber, and enhancing network infrastructure monitoring.

Minimum qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Experience

  • At least two years of demonstrated experience with supporting enterprise data networks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills as well as some level of project management. Team oriented, works well with others.
  • Ability and willingness to work different shifts between the hours of 7am and 11pm with future coverage increasing to 24 7. Participation in a rotating on-call network support will be required. Additional time may be required as needed or directed by management.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Preferences

  • Information Technology related certification is desired, preferably network related.
  • Ability to demonstrate a strong knowledge of and support for a predominately Cisco environment, a working knowledge of network testing equipment, and familiarity with campus wiring, including fiber optics.
  • Knowledge of the various transports such as Gigabit Ethernet, TLS, and DWDM services.
  • Familiarity with wireless (802.11) authentication, security and IOS, Cisco IOS software and Catalyst OS interfaces, Windows OS, Mac OS and user level familiarity with Unix OS.
  • Experience with providing coverage for the campus Network Operations Center (NOC) call handling, troubleshooting, administration systems including, trouble ticketing system (ServiceNow), network management system (Spectrum), work order system (Pinnacle).
  • Experience with electrical power and with supporting a large wireless system.

Additional certifications: CCNA or other relevant network certifications.

Physical demands: Incumbent will be required to perform "on-call" duties required to maintain various networks. Some stress factors may be involved due to the nature of the operation and the complexity of duties. This job requires the ability to install networking equipment that includes climbing ladders, lifting network equipment, working with hand tools, and accessing mechanical rooms. Must be able to drive a motor vehicle.
